Congestive heart failure in complete heart block may be promptly relieved by pacing, particularly in the elderly patient with heart block due to isolated disease of the conducting system, as the working myocardium is generally normal and effective control of the heart rate will promptly relieve dyspnoea and oedema, restoring the patient to normal activities by control of the heart rate alone. Although Adams-Stokes attacks are the usual indication for pacing in complete heart block, congestive cardiac failure must not be overlooked as a complication of complete heart block which is potentially remediable with modern treatment.
